Recognized as one of Canada’s finest portrait photographers, Spence’s works have been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally and are included in many private, public and corporate collections. Using a wide variety of natural, built, and human forms in her subject matter, Spence’s photographs investigate notions of portraiture, self-portraiture, family, community and identity as they are revealed through the passage of time. In November 2008, The Winnipeg Art Gallery opened a major survey exhibition of her works.

Average Good Looks
In June 1991, a murder was committed on the banks of the Assiniboine River in Winnipeg. This area was recognized as a gay cruising area. The murder was a gay bashing.
Visual artists Sheila Spence, Noreen Stevens, and Calvin Asmundson collaborated to create a public response. Their collaboration resulted in a billboard that sparked media coverage and acted as a catalyst for discussion on a topic rarely acknowledged: homophobia.
This is the story of Average Good Looks, an artist collective dedicated to placing positive representations of gays and lesbians in the public domain.
